First Edition Arts (FEA) has created the first module of its PERSPECTIVES SERIES meant to take a closer look at issues related to culture in organizations and institutions. The first module is titled THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: LOSING THE GENDER STEREOTYPING HABIT. FEA has tied up with Indo American Bharatanatyam dancer Aniruddha Knight, grandson of the legendary T. Balasaraswati. In this module we use the dance form, its social and cultural context and the dancer’s personal history as an Indo American dancer to look at how biases and gender stereotyping are a part of the social environment and conditioning. At the same time we contrast it with the fact that the dance, its training and material is at its highest level of perfection completely gender neutral. Hence, Aniruddha who is the first male dancer in a line of 8 hereditary women dancers and musicians before him, performs the same repertoire dominated by poems written by men in a woman’s voice as his grandmother did using the same techniques as a woman dancer would.
The entire module is therefore an experience of how he and his form traverse the gender challenges they encounter. He performs with his 4 live musicians including unusually a female rather than male vocalist. Devina Dutt and her colleague Priya who have designed the module and developed the script, will also be on stage engaging him, questioning him and unpeeling the nuances of gender fluidity and role playing that he seems to embody to make a subtle argument for freeing the mind. The module is part performance, part conversations and a personal telling of his unique position as an Indo American, male Bharatantyam dancer in contemporary India.
