| Raja Bhaiya resigns, CBI inquiry for senior policeman's murder

| Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav visited the wife of a senior police officer who was shot dead while on duty and agreed to her request that the CBI should investigate the murder.
The Chief Minister was confronted with angry shouts and slogans as he arrived in the Eastern UP village where Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia Ul Haq lived with his wife, Praveen.
Earlier today, Raja Bhaiya, a politician with a lengthy criminal record, was forced to resign as a minister after he was accused of criminal conspiracy in the policeman's murder, which took place in his constituency of Kunda.
"If I had a problem with him (the policeman), I would have had him transferred, not killed," said Raja Bhaiya, whose real name is Raguraj Pratap Singh.
Praveen says her husband was killed on the orders of Raja Bhaiya because he ignored warnings to abandon an investigation into a case of communal violence.
On Saturday, the head of the Ballipur village was shot over a land dispute. Mr Haq arrived to investigate the murder and was confronted by an angry mob before being shot in his chest and head.
The four men accused of shooting the police officer on Saturday night are allegedly Raja Bhaiya's associates.
Three policemen have been suspended for abandoning Mr Haq.
The charges against Raja Bhaiya, who was Food and Civil Supplies Minister, have embarrassed the Chief Minister who has repeatedly been accused of reneging on a campaign vow to end lawlessness in the state.
Opposition leader Mayawati says Mr Yadav's government exemplifies "goonda raj" or hooliganism, instructed and practiced by members of the ruling party. Mr Yadav's government completes its first anniversary on March 15.
