Mulayam praises Nitish,
Mulayam praises Nitish, but jokes Akhilesh can pull a Bihar 'in 15 days'
 INDIA , 4-June-2013  5:23:38 AM
Mulayam Singh Yadav has been one of the harshest critics of the Nitish Kumar-government in Bihar. Earlier this year he hit out at Nitish when the congress wooed the JDU with a special status for bihar and thousands of crores under the Backward region fund.

But today the Samajwadi Party chief did a unexpected u-turn. At a press conference in Lucknow, Mr Yadav praised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Mr Yadav said the Bihar Chief Minister has transformed the states roads and improved law and order. "Shops in patna are no longer looted," he said. And then, he quipped that his own son, Akhilesh, could "pull a Bihar in UP in 15 days, if he wanted to".

Mulayam Singh Yadav, who props up the UPA's minority government, has been a fractious ally lately. In recent months, Mr Yadav has warned his Samajwadi Party to prepare for early elections, signalling that he may pull the plug on Dr Manmohan Singh's coalition government. Yesterday, his party opposed the Food Security Bill, which the government hopes to introduce urgently, perhaps through an ordinance which the cabinet may clear today. The proposal guarantees more subsidized food to India's poorest, and the Congress is counting on it to deliver votes in the national election.

A discussion on the proposed flagship reform at a meeting of the Congress and its allies yesterday was shelved hours after the Samajwadi Party opposed it as "anti-farmer." Today, Mr Yadav said that his party will study the bill over the next few weeks, a stand that could signal hope for the Congress. If the Food Security Bill is cleared by the government as an ordinance using special constitutional powers, it will have to be cleared by parliament within six weeks of its next sitting.

Mr Yadav shot down reports today that he will aid the Congress in Uttar Pradesh by fielding weak candidates against its senior leaders. "Are you accusing us of being hand in glove with the Congress?"
