Ram Mandir push: Vishwa Hindu Paris
Ram Mandir push: Vishwa Hindu Parishad meets Mulayam Singh Yadav
 INDIA , 19-August-2013  3:8:35 AM
: In line with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's mandate for a twin approach to general elections 2014, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad or VHP will make a big push for the Ram temple agenda even as Narendra Modi and the BJP talk about development and inclusive politics.

The VHP, which is an RSS affiliate, met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, this weekend to seek administrative support for a yatra of seers or saints that it plans through UP.

During the Chaurasi (84) Kosi Parikrama of seers, starting August 25, it plans to resurrect the demand for a Ram temple at the disputed Babri-Masjid-Ramjanmbhoomi site in Ayodhya.

Details of Saturday's discussions vary, depending on who is narrating. The VHP, which plans to begin a nationwide agitation of holy men in October if Parliament does not pass a resolution on the Ram temple by then, says it discussed this with Mulayam Singh.

VHP leaders were quoted by PTI as saying that they had asked Mr Yadav to work as a bridge between Hindus and Muslims to "pave the way for building a Ram Temple" at the site where the 16th century Babri mosque was razed in December, 1992, by Hindu activists - an event that polarised voters and cast a long shadow on Indian politics.

They claimed that Mulayam Singh "responded positively."

But the Samajwadi Party denies he gave any assurances on mediating with Muslim leaders on the Ram temple to the 11 VHP leaders who met him. "The VHP leaders had come to ask for permission for the Yatra," said an SP leader close to Mr Yadav. "There was no assurance on temple negotiations. The VHP is free to say anything they like."

The SP accused the VHP of trying to polarise voters ahead of state elections and the general elections next year.

Mr Yadav counts UP's 18 per cent Muslim vote as a primary support base of his party.
