Under fire for derailing the Mumbai-bound Jnaneswari Express with loss of 148 lives in West Bengal on May 28, the Maoists have had a “rethink” and have instructed cadres not to cause any harm to railway passengers.
The CPI (Maoist) central committee has decided to spare the railways when they enforce a 48-hour bandh starting June 30 in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.
Maoist leader Kishenji, in a statement to the press, said that essential services like railways, electricity, ambulance, milk and newspapers will be kept out of the purview of the bandh.
Asked about this, Maoist ideologue Varavara Rao told The Indian Express: “It is a policy decision of the central committee of the CPI (Maoist) that Maoists will not sabotage railway tracks that might cause the death of civilians. No such step will be taken that will claim the lives of common people. The decision has been communicated to cadres of the CPI (Maoist) at all levels.”
