Large parts of Mumbai - nearly 40 per cent according to some estimates - were hit by power cuts on Tuesday, due to technical issues at a Tata Power Company Limited electricity generation unit.
Due to the problems, Tata Power has switched off certain feeders supplying power to some areas in Mumbai, said officials for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST), which buys electricity from Tata Power.
In a statement, Tata Power explained, "At 09:45 hours, the power supply was affected due to tripping of Unit #5 of Trombay Power Station." The company said this led to power cuts in areas including Parel, Mahalaxmi, Dharavi, and Chembur.
Meanwhile, Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra Group, tweeted, "Dark office in Mumbai.Lights out in the whole area. The coal crisis is beginning to literally show its dark side.
