Train blasts: Police probe security
Investigations into the Samjhauta Express blasts are now focusing on four passengers who were issued tickets without passports.
 INDIA , 20-February-2007  10:0:4 AM
In a glaring security lapse, the police are examining whether these could have been the bombers.

The investigating team is scanning through the passenger list, which has over 600 names.

In Panipat meanwhile sketches of two men, that the Haryana police believe are suspected bombers, have been released.

About 68 people died in the blaze that destroyed two compartments of the train near Panipat.

Police said the suspects argued with railway police and said they wanted to go to Ahmedabad before getting off the train when it slowed down at Panipat.

The blasts followed 15 minutes later.

Police also displayed timers, pipes and bottles with a green liquid and other devices used in the attacks.

"When the eyewitness boarded the train at 11:00 pm (IST), he saw the suspects having a heated argument with RPF personnel. They were arguing about the destination of the train. The men were carrying suspicious luggage.

"The argument went on for 20-25 minutes. Finally the RPF told them they could get off the train when it slowed. The two suspects got off around 11:30 pm, 15 minutes before the blasts. On the basis of this eye witness account we have made sketches of the suspects," said Sharad Kumar, IG, Rohtak Range

The train is not meant to have any scheduled stops before Attari but the police claim the train slowed down because of construction work near the tracks.

Sources in central intelligence agencies have told NDTV that they disagree with the Haryana police theory.

They say bombers are unlikely to plant bombs on a train and then travel on the same train.

Infact central agencies believe there were five bombers who got on the train at the Old Delhi Railway Station and planted the five bombs.

They triggered the timers by locking the suitcases and then got off before the train left.

The bombs were crude and of low intensity but were set up to cause heavy damage through a fire.
