Faking a graduation degree and an employment offer are among the first steps for illegal immigrants

The lure of going abroad still makes many young men resort to all kinds of ways to con the visa offices.
Much after the illegal immigration racket surfaced and big fish like BJP MP Babubhai Katara were caught in the net, the trend seems to continue.
Most youngsters in Punjab dream of living abroad, and some of them are ready to do whatever it takes to make that dream come true.
Faking a graduation degree and an employment offer are among the first steps for illegal immigrants.
Mehar Singh's son Manjit Singh forged an employment letter, a birth certificate and a Bachelor of Science degree and migrated to Australia in 1992.
Once there, he applied for asylum, claiming he was being harassed in Punjab by the police. His father in Patiala is unaware of his son's talent for forgery.
''My son did not go to university. He did his schooling from Patiala. I don't know about any degree,'' he said.
Such degrees are easy to get. Even officials of Punjabi University in Patiala admit there is a racket rampant in Punjab.
''Fake degrees are being used to go to foreign lands as well. There is no doubt about it and then they try and seek employment.
''Normally they get caught as these degrees come for verification,'' explains Baldev Singh, Chief Coordinator, Punjab University, Patiala.
Restrictive measures
The state government has now set up a new NRI affairs department and district SSPs have been asked to form special cells to check immigration frauds and make sure people aren't cheated by agents.
This also comes in the wake of the passport scam earlier which had many involved from the state of Punjab.
''Agents dealing with such cases make commitments to the people, that they will make all the documents for them to go aboard.
''They are the ones to prepare all the documents. But once the boys are there, the next thing to do is to help to the extent possible,'' said HS Bains, Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister.
