Girl child demand rises in Gujarat
In the last 12 months, 74 girls were adopted in Gujarat compared to only 53 boys - a fact highlighted by the state's adoption coordinating agency
 INDIA , 16-January-2008  1:18:22 AM
In a positive trend that has begun in Gujarat, there is an increased demand for the girl child for adoption, who was once neglected in the State.

In the last 12 months, 74 girls were adopted in Gujarat compared to only 53 boys - a fact highlighted by the state's adoption coordinating agency.

Natubhai R Patel, Secretary, ICSW of Gujarat State said, ''Parents who don't have children biologically have now started believing that even girls can work miracles, be it President Pratibha Patil or UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi or may be Sunita Williams, so they are coming up with the ideas of adopting more girls.''

Sandeep Parmar an activist said, ''There are also cases these days where parents who had adopted a girl child three years back from us are now coming back seeking another girl to adopt.''

The flipside is that more girls are still abandoned at birth and so they end up at orphanages. But luckily now many of them are going to loving families, when they are three months to six years of age instead of spending their life in an orphanage.

Sister Pushpa Paul, Director, Matruchhaya said, ''Things are changing very fast as people are seeking more and more girl children though earlier boys were mostly adopted. When there is no boy left with us, people used to accept girl children, just as an alternative, we are now happy with the new trend.''

Though some of these children are lucky to find a new home, some are still waiting to find their new parents and homes and if this trend continues, soon they many orphan girls could find homes for themselves.
