J&K imbroglio Baig hits back at Con

 INDIA , 19-August-2008  0:14:54 AM
The man at the centre of the storm that has engulfed Jammu and Kashmir is former state law minister and Dy CM Muzaffar Baig who said yes to the Amarnath land transfer.

Now, his former ally the Congress has directly blamed him for the mess.

"The law department from 2004 has kept saying in notings that it was ok to transfer the land," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.

But Muzaffar Baig says those notings have nothing to do with the land transfer issue. They are related to a completely different case in the Supreme Court on forest land where the state argued that only state laws will apply to J&K and not those of the Centre.

"This is total misinformation, if not an outright lie. Mr Singhvi is misinformed," he said.

But, Muzaffar had earlier said, "Yes, I am responsible for this order as a member of the Cabinet. But there was no recommendation from the law department."

He added that it came from the forest department. It came to us in February also, but at that time PDP opposed it and later the order was amended. It was good because it did not transfer the title of the land.

So, why didn't the PDP clarify? Muzaffar Baig says he held four press conferences trying to do that but no one listened. And now, the protests across the state show that the issue has gone way beyond land.
