Kolkata girl battles rare disorder
For 27-year-old Payel Bhattacharya from Kolkata, life hangs in a balance. Four major surgeries and a brain surgery later, Payel has now been diagnosed
 INDIA , 23-August-2007  10:25:24 AM
For 27-year-old Payel Bhattacharya from Kolkata, life hangs in a balance. Four major surgeries and a brain surgery later, Payel has now been diagnosed with the von Hippel Lindau (VHL) disease, an extremely rare genetic disorder that triggers tumor formation.

Her liver is damaged and only a transplant, costing at least Rs 30 lakh, can save her. But the amount is something the family simply can't afford.

''In India there is no definite record keeping but I have talked to several national level pathological laboratories. In my surgical career of 20 years I am seeing a VHL case for the first time,'' said Dr Shibajyoti Ghosh, Gastrointestinal surgeon.

An avid reader and a cyber geek, Payel spends time painting on the computer. Never mind frequent convulsions and nagging abdominal pain, the spirited 27-year-old, who first went under the scalpel when she was two, is also a Shah Rukh fan.

''I used to feel scared when I was young, about 12-years-old. Later I developed a feeling that we shouldn't be afraid. Likewise-, when my mother went into a delirium saying, will I be able to save you, I won't be able to live without you, I tried to convince her that why are you doing this? Let me live, let me enjoy my life,'' said Payel.

''I feel so scared. Whether I'll be able to save her is what keeps bothering me every moment. What will happen next, this thought is killing me,'' said Banani Bhattacharya, mother.

A born fighter that she is, Payel has been fighting it out for the last 25 years. Her deteriorating liver condition may have made her battle even tougher, but she is ready to fight till the end.

She can surely win if you come forward with your offer of help.
